Kobus Verwey

Director

Kobus Verwey was born in Bloemfontein on 18 December 1961, the eldest of two sons. He began his schooling at the former Koot Niemann Primary School and matriculated in 1979 at JBM Hertzog. Following his secondary education, he completed two years of military service, concluding his training as a lieutenant at Pietersburg Air Force Base.

He went on to study at the University of the Free State, where he obtained his B.Proc degree in 1985 and his LLB degree in 1987. Kobus was admitted as an attorney of the High Court on 4 June 1987 and joined Hill McHardy & Herbst Inc. as a professional assistant on 14 July 1987. He became a partner at the firm on 1 March 1988 and served as the managing director until 28 February 2025.

Kobus specialises in both High Court and Magistrate's Court litigation and brings a wealth of experience to these areas. In recent years, he has expanded his expertise to include the administration of deceased estates. 

He is actively involved in the legal community and presently serves as a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Free State Legal Practice Council. He is also an external examiner for the Department of Private Law at the University of the Free State and was recently appointed to the newly established LLB Academic Advisory Board. In addition, he serves as an examiner for the Free State Legal Practice Council, evaluating candidate attorneys. 

Kobus is married to Kathy Verwey, and they have three sons: Nelis and JM, both practising attorneys, and Albert, a qualified pastor serving at Doxa Deo in Bloemfontein. He is a proud grandfather to five grandchildren. 

 Outside of his professional life, Kobus is an avid golfer and enjoys music, singing, and spending quality time with his family. His life is grounded in values that he holds dear:  family, integrity, honesty, loyalty, and hard work.
